##### **Relationship between dispositional optimism, age, and choice of the study program of students of Pedagogy and Early and Preschool Education** |
##### **Abstract** |
Dispositional optimism is a cognitive construct marked by positive outcome expectancies for one's future (Carver & Scheier, 2014). It has multiple benefits for one's physical and mental well-being as well as for her/his learning and work effectiveness, therefore dispositional optimism is considered important for the personal and professional development of pedagogical workers. With this in mind, the aim of the research was to examine and understand the relationship between dispositional optimism, age, and choice of the study program of students of pedagogy and early and preschool education. The mixed methods research involved 180 students of the above study programs at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split. All students were females, aged 18 to 55. The General Data Questionnaire, the Revised Life Orientation Test (LOT-R) (Scheier, Carver, & Bridges, 1994), and the Focus Group Guide designed for this purpose were used in the research. The research started from two null hypotheses according to which no differences in the dispositional optimism of students were expected with regard to their age and choice of the study program. The hypotheses were rejected because future preschool teachers and students over the age of 29 assessed themselves as more optimistic. With the aim of a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the obtained quantitative indicators, two focus groups were conducted consisting of 14 preschool teachers older than 29 years. The obtained focus groups results were processed by qualitative content analysis and considered in the context of the importance of optimism in the work of pedagogues and preschool teachers. Special emphasis was put on the relationship between dispositional optimism, age, and choice of the study program as well as the need for further research of the factors related to dispositional optimism. |
