# Summerhill – povodom 100 godina postojanja legendarne škole

Škola-internat *Summerhill* (V. Britanija) je najpoznatija europska privatna, neovisna, alternativna, demokratska i samoupravna škola. *Summerhill* je utemeljio 1921. godine škotski učitelj, pedagog i književnik Alexander Sutherland Neill (1883-1973). Svrha rada je kritička analiza pedagoških ideja i odgojne prakse u proteklih stotinu godina postojanja *Summerhilla*. U radu dominiraju deskriptivna i kauzalna metoda, te metoda kritičke analize odabranih tekstova i pedagoška kritika. Vodstvo *Summerhilla* i učitelji ostali su vjerni pedagoškoj ideji A. S. Neilla: Odgoj bez prisile i škola prilagođena potrebama djeteta. Svakodnevni život *Summerhilla*: pedagoški management, nastava, izvannastavne aktivnosti, učenička samouprava, suradnja s roditeljima i okolinom potvrđuju navedenu misao kroz stoljeće postojanja. U *Summerhillu* dominira liberalan odgoj. Sjajno razdoblje u životu škole *Summerhill* bilo je 60-tih godina 20. stoljeća, kada je A. S. Neill objavio svoje najvažnije djelo: *A Radical Approach to Child Rearing* (1960). Najteže razdoblje u povijesti *Summerhilla* bile su 1999. i 2000. godina, kada je Ured za standarde u obrazovanje (*Ofsted*) napisao negativan izvještaj o kvaliteti rada i najavio zatvaranje *Summerhilla*. Slijedila je epska borba ravnateljice Zoë Readhead, učitelja, učenika i napredne javnosti protiv tiranije pedagoške uravnilovke *Ofsteda*. *Summerhill* je opstao i nastavio svoj razvoj u skladu s temeljnom idejom osnivača, A. S. Neilla. *Summerhill* je danas istaknuta privatna, neovisna i alternativna škola s jasnim planovima budućeg razvoja. |

Boarding school *Summerhill* (Great Britain) is European the most famous, private, independent, alternative, democratic and self-governing school. *Summerhill* was founded by Alexander Sutherland Neill (1883-1973), Scottish teacher, educator and writer, in year 1921. The purpose of this paper is critical analysis of pedagogical ideas and educational practices implemented in *Summerhill* over the last 100 years. In this paper, mainly descriptive and causal methods were used, as well as methods of critical analysis of selected texts and pedagogical critics. Both *Summerhill*'s management and teachers have remained loyal to the pedagogical idea of A. S. Neill: Upbringing without force and school adjusted to the needs of children. Everyday life in *Summerhill*: Pedagogical management, lessons, extracurricular activities, student's self-governance, collaboration with parents and community confirm stated thought over the century of school's existence. In the Summerhill is mainly liberal upbringing. The great period in the School's life was in the 60s of the 20th century, when A. S. Neill published his the most important edition: *A Radical Approach to Child Rearing* (1960). The most difficult period in the Summerhill's history were years 1999. and 2000. when the Office for Standards in Education (*OFSTED*) issued negative report regarding quality of education used in the School and announced it's cessation. Zoë Readhead, the School's Director, together with teachers, students and the advanced public, had started epic struggle against the *OFSTED's* pedagogical mainstream tyranny. *Summerhill* has survived and continued it's development in line with principles of A. S. Neill, the founder. *Summerhill* is today prominent private, independent and alternative school with clear plans for future development. |
