The importance of art education for the cognitive, social, and emotional development of children and youth

Abstract

OurThe researchpaper relies primarily oncompares the ideasnational educational system of Croatia and Italy in 0-6 years segment, in order to present the principles, values, and objectives underlying the art educatormusic Henryeducation Schaefer-Simmern,as whoa worked‘quality’ until the endfactor of thetout 1970s.court Supportededucation. byThe Rudolfcritical-comparative Arnheim and other contemporaries, he had extensive experience in educational work and aimed to achieve specific goals through art. Though he wrote little about his approach, we can learn about his goals and teaching methods from his students and followers. As his approach relied heavily on tracking the development of students' artistic expression, frequent discussions, and self-reflection on their own artistic work, it raises the question of whether such a method can be carried out todayanalysis, within the school context. He asked his students to carefully observe, identify problems, suggest possible solutions,international and testEuropean theirlegislative assumptions,framework, will point out the formative potential of art music education oriented towards historical and allcultural of this would be useful for the artistic and holistic development of children even today.sense.

The goalprimary purpose of ourboth workcurricula, isthe topromotion examineof histhe ideasintegral and teachingharmonious methodschild’s growth, calls into question the relevance that art music can assume in nourishing the child’s potential for development in this age group, affecting on one’s own psychophysical well-being. The eighth key competence, highlighted by researchingthe availabletwo literature.documents, Basedemphasizes onthe ourkey findings, we can identify which aspectsrole of hisart approachmusic could be beneficialboth in acultural modernawareness context,raising asand wellsense asof whether his principles can be adaptedbelonging to the currentwider European community, and in education system.to Bycreative implementingand innovative expression. Promoting the proposededucational approach,strategy itof isproblematizing possibleand learning by research and experience, the curricula enhance the initiating possibility of a child’s critical thinking and open up a privileged way to aidart students in developingmusic not justonly theirfor artistic expressionand aesthetic education, but also their comprehensive skills, which are vital for theirthe successreflective thought formation.

In this perspective, quality music education, intentionally targeted at specific instructive areas, plays a key role in cognitive, social, and emotional development, fostering the first forms of active citizenship. This intervention seeks to stimulate the scientific community discussion on relevance of music education focused on art music in the future.educational continuum curriculum-building from the 0-to-6 segment, as a ‘quality’ coefficient of education starting from Early Childhood Education and Care system.
